back spasm

4-12-12

Comfort was not my friend last night.

During my workout yesterday morning, I noted a twang in my right should blade. I assumed it was minor until it started to gnaw at me like an ROUS and I actually yelped at one point while pulling the 60 pounds of weight smoothly across my chest.

I opted to stop. I was a little over half way done, but I knew I would be done for much longer if I continued at this pace. As if I confirm I was doing the right thing, the muscles in my back did a little spasm dance and it took much effort to change back into my regular clothes.

FUCK! It was gobs of breathtaking pain. Each movement produced a gasp which in turn only made me hurt more. It was a vicious cycle that sent me to my desk in an exasperated state. I was pissed, I was sad, I was in pain. I was tempted to go home, but sucked it up to pop some Tylenol and throw an ice pack on my shoulder.

Stephanie pointed out I needed to try to calm down and breathe, despite the needles it was shooting up and down my back all the way down my right arm. Oxygen would only help, and being in a less chaotic state of mind would also assist in healing. So I heated up my soup and tried to relax.

When I got home, Ken helped me out and massaged out a lot of the worst knots. It was an excruciating process, but I think it helped. I also used the heating pad (which has come to work with me as well) several times, which was a godsend.

Bobby had a rough afternoon. His first grade homework starts to get to him. He has two math sheets, two English sheets, he had to write a long sentence 5 times, and do a book report. It doesn’t sound like much if you are 36, but at 7, it is a lot. Especially since he wasn’t feeling 100%. He was distracted and tired and at one point I went in and he had done nothing for 20 minutes. When I asked him what was up, he released the flood gates and was a teary mess for 5 minutes. It is frustrating how much work they give them. He has at least an hour of work a night, if not more. Maybe I am just over protective, but it seems a bit excessive. I have been assured it gets better, but knowing how much homework I had when I got older, and knowing that their amount of work is 10 times as much each year only scares me further.

Alyssa came by briefly to bring me her copies of the second and third books from the Hunger Games Trilogy. YAY! It was so nice to see her, even if it was only for a bit. She looks so good! She has been working out hard and has lost weight like I have. Our email encouragement back and forth has been good for both of us, holding us each accountable for our daily routines. We agreed that once I finish these two books we will get together and do dinner!

I was able to let the boys do a bath instead of a shower last night which in turn allowed me to watch at least one full episode of Glee. I am a good month and change behind. We are behind on all shows we watch. There just isn’t enough time in the day anymore.

Punishment was enforced last night as well. Ken removed the mattresses from both of the boys’ beds because once again he caught them jumping up and down on Dax’s bed in the morning instead of getting ready for school. We had threatened to remove their beds, and this time we essentially did. They were set up with some blankets and a pillow on the floor for bedtime last night. Sadly, I think they actually were excited about this arrangement. I am guessing in a couple days this will not be the case, but for now they will sleep on the floor.

We also managed to secure babysitting on Saturday morning. Aaron agreed to watch them and even said to have them come over to his parents’ house so that they had multiple people hanging out with them. We will probably bring the Wii and have Lego sets at the ready since Dax has been enjoying building large sets while Bobby has been quite happy with playing Star Wars. It will work out well, allowing us to hit up the morning classes and we should get back to MB by around 1. This will give us enough time to go home, change and relax for a bit before we meet Matt for dinner.

Sleep was difficult since I could not find any position that was even remotely comfortable for any length of time. As if that wasn’t bad enough, one of the neighbors has a dog that opted to bark much of the night. I am hoping this evening will be better.

We have soccer practice tonight, which will be interesting based on my back. I am planning on doing my gym workout today, less a couple of the more back angering items. If I thought we could handle taking the soccer gear on my bike I would also say we should ride up to practice, but we will see how that goes. I think it would be fun.

For now, I have to resist the urge to just sit here and read Catching Fire which is much too close to me. I have read a couple chapters and have already become reinvested in the characters that enchanted me in the first book. These are the dangers of enjoying stories.

Dax’s field trip has been funded and scheduled for May 4th. It sounds like both Ken and I can go as helpers. I get an automatic pass with teachers now I am guessing based on the ridiculous amount of photos I take of the entire class. It makes me valuable. I know that in coming years I will probably not go on their trips as they start to get annoyed with their crazy mother. I might as well enjoy it while they still like me.

Lycos is getting old. She has had several accidents in the house now. Mostly she has peed at night, but yesterday evening she peed when I was just in the other room. She doesn’t seem to understand how to tell us she has to go. Luna knows to go to the door and request assistance. Lycos has just gotten to the point where she doesn’t care. My poor old pup. Luckily, she is still chipper and affectionate. Silly pup.

It appears I have Sunday free. This is happy making. Perhaps I will use it to sit out back and enjoy my book to the sounds of boy and dog play. If it is too cold, I can always curl up on the surprisingly comfy couch with a couple of cats. I now just have to make it through today and tomorrow. LOL!
