We went and saw my dad on Friday at the hospital. What a difference a day makes! From Thursday evening to Friday afternoon, they pumped him full of fluids and meds. By the time Saturday rolled around, he was even sitting up more and joking around. There were some concerns during his stay involving his Coumadin levels. He is supposed to be between 2 and 3, but Friday night he was up to 9. This put him on bed rest, since these high levels meant that even a minor fall could make him bleed out. By Saturday, though, levels were back down to between 3 and 4, so this was good. Last I spoke to my mom, which was yesterday afternoon, he was supposed to be out by last night. I have not heard from her, but I know what a pain in the ass it is to get discharged and then settled in at home. Plus, he is going to have an IV left in. He will have to go get a drip of antibiotics every day for two weeks. They were hoping he would only have to go down to our doc’s office, but he may have to go to the hospital. Either way, he will be spending probably 2 hours a day with a bag attached to him.
The diagnosis was E-coli and Salmonella. I am glad that is all it is, but it was awful seeing it all. I don’t wish this on anyone.
Friday night I ended up going out with Stephanie to our bar. I say our bar as if we have been there a million times, but really, it was only the second time. That being said, it did not disappoint. It is filled with this strange mix of old people and a handful of younger folks. I love watching these couples dance. They don’t talk, they don’t even smile, but they seem so in tune with one another. It is charming. Then again, I did point out that this place seems right out of a David Lynch flick.
Saturday late morning took us to Long Beach for Mike’s funeral. It was a Catholic service that thankfully was attended by quite a lot of people. I was so happy to see so much of his family, who were all incredibly sweet. Especially his cousin, Bob, whose house we went back to. He was this charming old guy whose place is fantastic. It isn’t big or anything, but it clearly is set up to entertain people, and you can tell he just loves life. His wife was a total doll, too.
The service itself was interesting, as I always find those things interesting. The boys were very well behaved considering the fact that they had to be quiet for 45 minutes in between sitting and standing 100 times. I loved the story Mike’s sister told. I was also moved at one of our neighbor’s sons who was there. He can’t be more than 10, but he was crying, despite being embarrassed about it. Poor darling must only just be understanding death.
I was hesitant to go to the house after the chapel, but I am glad we went. First off, Bob’s house and hospitality is not something to be missed. It also was nice, though because we ended up chatting with Anna, Mike’s other next door neighbor, quite a bit. We used to despise her, but she has grown on me quite a bit over the years. I also think that Mike’s sister was very appreciative of us coming.
They gave us back a clock that we had given to Mike. It was that was in my parents’ house while I was growing up. It had since stopped working and I was going to get rid of it. However, we knew that Mike loved antiques and clocks so we offered it to him. He was thrilled. He cleaned it up and made meticulous notes about what he did to it. We now have it displayed proudly in our living room, and I have to say I am enjoying the bongs it sounds out every 30 minutes. Thank you, Mike.
Saturday night took us to the Home Depot Center. Holy fuck, MQ gave me some kick ass seats. Not only were we on the 50 yard line, we were in a fab section that gave us free hot dogs, popcorn, nachos and sodas. We even got free hot chocolate, which the boys were thrilled about. It also wasn’t a sold out game or section, which allowed the boys to sit up behind us where they could see better. It was fantastic!
The game was quite exciting. Chivas lost, but the game included several yellow cards and even a coach and player being kicked out! Total excitement. Some of the best parts included this one section of fans that had props and flags and were so much fun to watch. I loved how jazzed they were about their team.
There was a wave at one point, which tickled the shit out of Dax. He was actually in a maniacal giggle when it would go by. He loved the hell out of that.
We ended up staying for the whole game, which surprised me, but despite the boys getting a bit tired, they wanted to hang out.
The announcer said something about getting a free half dozen Krispy Kreme donuts with our ticket stubs, so we went there in the morning. Sadly, they didn’t specify that it was only valid if they won. Doh’! Oh well, we got the boys some donuts anyway and had planned on taking some to the hospital. My mom recommended us not coming since my dad now had a neighbor, so we ended up going home.
I spent a lot of time on the living room. I was hell bent on making it less of a storage room. Specifically, the boys have been working on these large sets and I didn’t want them stored on the piano bench. So I cleared out a spot in the playroom for them to be set up nicely. I also moved much of the school based things from the living room wall into the playroom, making their desk space more personal.
I added new things to the piano and I moved other things around. I was quite pleased when I was done since it seemed to make the place less just thrown together.
Ken worked on laundry and other various projects including fixing a burner on the stove and re positioning the watering hole. We have our flowing bucket of water for the cats. Lately, I had been putting down a tin bowl for the dogs inside, but this has caused the cats to think that is better. It means filling that damn thing every day. So I thought we could move the other one down for everyone to use. So far so good, and it also cleaned up their food area a bit.
We also sat down at caught up on a few episodes of Glee while the boys played out back with NB. It was all in all a pleasant day.
I am leaving here in about an hour to go get my boob ultrasounded. It is a follow up to my biopsy. I am hoping all is well, and to be honest, this is one of those times where I am not all hypochondriaced out! YAY!
I just got an email from my dad:
Good morning Ness
